Celebrates 56th Anniversary in Baghdad

The Iraqi Democratic Youth Federation (IDYF) celebrated its 56th anniversary at a cultural and social event held in Baghdad on 15 October 2007. Hundreds of youth packed the Oil Institute Hall, and were joined by representatives of several democratic and civil society organisations. The event was attended by a delegation of the Iraqi Communist Party, including comrade Raid Fahmi, the Minister of Science and Technology.

The programme of the event included poetry recital by a number of young Iraqi poets who extolled the lofty aims of IDYF and its struggle for a free, independent and prosperous future for Iraqi youth.

Several theatre and folk groups took part, including a group led by the artist Ahmed al-Kurdi who presented a number of youth songs and traditional group dancing expressing the diverse rich culture and national unity of the Iraqi people. It was lively and a joyful occasion celebrating the anniversary of IDYF.

Condemns Criminal Bomb Attack in Samarra

Terrorists, extremist fundamentalists and supporters of Saddam’s regime, have committed this morning a heinous crime, to be added to their crimes that are aimed at harming Iraq's national fabric. They have carried out a bomb attack on the holy shrines of Imams Ali al-Hadi and Al-Hassan al-Askari. This cowardly act is further evidence on the evil schemes of the enemies of Iraq to stoke sectarian strife and destroy its national unity. This crime, like others before, is targeting all the Iraqis, their cultural and spiritual values, and the Iraqi national identity.

We, the Iraqi youth in IDYF, condemn and denounce this cowardly act, and all acts that target holy places, shrines and places of worship. We call on all Iraqi youth, of all affiliations, sects and ethnicities, to stand united, be vigilant and reject any temptation for revenge, so as to foil the attempts of those who want to destroy Iraq and shed the blood of Iraqis. While condemning this criminal act, we call upon the government to carry out its duty, uncover the perpetrators and ensure that they receive utmost legal punishment

Let this heinous crime be an incentive to unify our ranks in the face of Iraq's real enemies and to defend the sacred national unity.

 Statement on the 54th Anniversary

of Iraqi Democratic Youth Federation (IDYF)

On the 54th anniversary of the foundation of the Iraqi Democratic Youth Federation (IDYF), 15th October 1951, its Secretariat issued a statement expressing determination to continue relentless work to improve the conditions of  youth and activate their role in building the new Iraq. The following are excerpts of the statement issued on 16 Oct. 2005:

Iraqi youth are celebrating the 54th anniversary of IDYF during a crucial stage for the homeland. On this occasion, they recall the past and an honourable record of struggle. They remember the pioneers and martyrs of the movement who paved the path for youth to continue their march today, despite all attempts by remnants of the dictatorial regime and terrorists to sabotage our beloved Iraq. This record of struggle is an inspiration for the youth as they mobilize their cultural and scientific potential, pledging to rebuild the country, lay the foundations of freedom and move forward towards a democratic future, free of power sharing on sectarian and ethnic basis.

On this occasion, we reaffirm our determination to work relentlessly and selflessly for improving the conditions of youth and to rejuvenate their positive role in building a new Iraq.
